This talk will offer a way of understanding why systemic racism cannot be "cured" by intellectual understanding of cultural facts and differences, and that the "cure" is a spiritual and emotional matter that calls us to action as a faith community.

Who is Dr. Holmes?
Dr. Dorothy Holmes lives and works in Bluffton, SC. She is a retired emerita professor, center
program director, and Chair of the Center for Professional Psychology of The George University. She
now practices clinical psychology and psychoanalysis in Bluffton. She earned her BS with honors
from the University of Illinois and her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Southern Illinois University.
Thereafter, she completed a two-year fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of
Rochester (NY), and she completed psychoanalytic studies at the Washington Baltimore Center for
Psychoanalysis where she became a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst. She is a prolific
publisher of scholarly journal articles on race, gender, and intersectionality. After a 41-year academic
and clinical practice career in Washington, DC, she relocated to the low country of South Carolina full
time in 2011 with her husband Raymond Holmes and became a member of UUCS in 2012 preceded
by 30 years of UU membership and service at All Souls Church Unitarian in Washington, DC. She has
served the UUCS congregation in a variety of capacities, including as President of the Congregation.
Currently, Dorothy is a Worship Associate and is a member of the Nominating and Anti-Racism
committees. On the personal side, Dorothy was widowed at the end of 2018. She remembers
Raymond with much love and appreciation. Dorothy is the proud grandmother of three and great-
grandmother of six; she lives now with her two adorable Burmese cats -- Willi B and Gini.
