At 85 I can look back on a very good life. Looking forward is quite a bit more probabilistic. I work hard at staying in the best physical shape possible. Maintaining my mental acuity is proving to be an even more difficult task. I fear dementia, and the loss of control that accompanies it. I have seen it ravage the brains of my brilliant mother and too many friends and relatives. I don’t fear death, but do fear the loss of dignity that far too often precedes it. What I long for is the ability to control my own death. I think that providing people, while they are still mentally competent, with the drugs needed to end life is the best way to enable people to achieve Death with Dignity - which is the name of an organization that I support. Unfortunately, to qualify for the assisted suicide drugs you have to have less than six months life expectancy, which pretty much rules out people diagnosed with dementia.
